Introducing Secure Credential Sharing with Email Verification
Sharing a username and password should not mean putting sensitive login details in a regular chat message or leaving them in an email thread forever.
UnlockLater now offers secure credential sharing: a simple way to send login details through a private link that is protected by recipient email verification and a one-time password (OTP).
You can create a secure username and password share without creating an account. Choose how long the credentials should remain available, and UnlockLater emails the private link to the intended recipient.
What Is Secure Credential Sharing?
Secure credential sharing lets you send a username and password through a time-limited link instead of placing the credentials directly in an email, chat, or shared document.
The recipient must:
- Open the private UnlockLater link.
- Enter the exact email address that received the invitation.
- Enter the six-digit verification code sent to that email.
- View the username and password only after successful verification.
This extra step helps make sure that possession of the link alone is not enough to reveal the credentials.
Why Use a Private Credential Link?
1. Keep login details out of ordinary messages
Regular email and chat threads are easy to forward, copy, screenshot, or leave in an inbox indefinitely. A private credential link gives the login details their own access flow instead of mixing them with a long conversation.
2. Verify the recipient's email address
UnlockLater sends a one-time verification code to the recipient email entered by the sender. The credentials are not displayed before that code is successfully verified.
The verification code:
- Contains six digits
- Expires after 10 minutes
- Has a limited number of attempts
- Is cleared after successful verification
3. Set an expiration time
Not every login needs to remain available permanently. You can choose how long a credential share remains active, from one day up to one year. The default is one week, which works well for temporary access and short-term projects.
Examples include:
- A contractor who needs access for a few days
- A virtual assistant working on a weekly task
- A family member using a shared service while traveling
- A client reviewing a private dashboard
- A temporary account created for an event or campaign
4. Revoke access when plans change
If access is no longer needed, the sender can revoke an active share. Revoked links cannot be used to reveal the credentials.
5. Protect stored credentials
UnlockLater encrypts the username and password before storing them. The database does not store the credential values as readable text. Credentials are only decrypted after the recipient completes the required verification flow.
How to Share a Username and Password
Step 1: Open the credential-sharing page
Go to the UnlockLater username and password sharing page. The page works for both signed-in and logged-out users.
Step 2: Enter the recipient and credentials
Provide:
- The recipient's email address
- The username
- The password
- How many days the share should remain active
Double-check the email address. The recipient will need access to that inbox to complete verification.
Step 3: Create the private link
Select Create and email secure link. UnlockLater encrypts the credentials and sends the recipient an invitation email containing the private link.
You can also copy the generated link if you need to share it through another trusted channel.
Step 4: Let the recipient verify access
The recipient opens the link, confirms the email address, and enters the OTP delivered to that inbox. Only then are the username and password shown.
Practical Uses for Credential Sharing
Temporary access for freelancers and contractors
Give a freelancer access to a service for the length of a project without leaving the login in a permanent message thread. When the project ends, revoke the link or let it expire.
Sharing household subscriptions
Send access to a streaming, storage, travel, or household service while keeping the login details behind email verification.
Client and agency collaboration
Agencies and consultants can share temporary access to reporting tools, staging systems, or campaign platforms with a clear expiration date.
Travel and family support
Share a temporary account with a trusted family member while you are away. The recipient can verify the invitation from their own email without needing to create an UnlockLater account.
Event and campaign accounts
For a short-term event, launch, or promotion, send access with an expiration that matches the project timeline. This reduces the chance that an old link remains active indefinitely.
Credential Sharing Security Best Practices
Secure links are helpful, but they should still be used carefully:
- Share credentials only with someone you trust.
- Send the invitation to the recipient's personal or work email, not a shared inbox.
- Choose the shortest practical expiration period.
- Revoke the share when temporary access is no longer needed.
- Avoid reusing the same password across important accounts.
- Change the password at the source service when access should end completely.
- Never post a private credential link publicly.
UnlockLater protects the sharing flow, but it cannot make an unsafe password safe or replace access controls at the service where the account exists.
Private Sharing for a Limited Time
Credential sharing does not need to be permanent or complicated. With email verification, encrypted storage, expiration controls, and revocation, UnlockLater gives you a clearer way to share temporary login access.
