Voice Notes: Send a Message in Your Own Voice, for Later

Some messages sound more like you when they are spoken than typed. A familiar voice can make a birthday wish warmer, a pep talk more personal, or a memory easier to share.

With UnlockLater Voice Notes, you can record in your browser, listen back, and choose when your private recording becomes available. The message stays unavailable until its unlock time and any access checks you choose are satisfied.

What you can do with a Voice Note

  • Record directly in your browser. Your microphone is requested when you press Record. You cannot select or upload an existing audio file.
  • Preview before saving. Stop the recording, listen to it, and record again if you want to make a change. The recording stays on your device until you confirm it.
  • Choose the moment it unlocks. Set a date and time, with your time zone shown on the page.
  • Add optional privacy controls. Require a password, limit access to one view or a set number of views, or ask the recipient to verify their email before unlocking.
  • Share a link. After saving, copy the message link and send it to the person you have in mind.

Voice Notes can be up to five minutes and 25 MB. A short, focused recording is often easier to revisit than a long one.

How to create and share one

  1. Open the Voice Note page and sign in with Google.
  2. Select Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  3. Select Stop and preview when you are finished. Listen back, or choose Record again if you want another take.
  4. Set the unlock date and time. Check the displayed time zone before moving on.
  5. If you want, add a password, a view limit, or a recipient email with verification.
  6. Confirm and schedule the Voice Note, then copy its link and share it privately.

The recipient opens the link to listen once the note has unlocked. If you set a password or email verification, they will need to complete that step too.

Ideas for when to use a Voice Note

A birthday greeting that arrives at midnight

Record a few specific wishes and set the unlock time for the start of the birthday. Mention a favorite memory or something you are looking forward to doing together. Share the link ahead of time so the recipient knows to come back to it.

Encouragement before a big day

Send a calm, personal message before a presentation, exam, first day at a new job, or race. A few words in your own voice can feel more reassuring than a generic reminder. Set the unlock time for the morning of the event.

A check-in for your future self

Capture what you are working toward, what you hope will change, or what you want to remember about this moment. Schedule it for a coming milestone, such as the end of a course or a move to a new city.

A story or clue for a shared event

Record a family story, a toast, or the next clue in a surprise. Set the unlock time for the gathering or the moment when the next part should be revealed. For a sequence, create a separate note for each reveal.

A message across time zones

If you and someone you care about are apart, record a greeting when it is convenient for you and schedule it for a meaningful time in their day. The link will be ready after it unlocks, so share it in advance and tell them when to return.

Tips for a recording that feels natural

  • Start with the recipient’s name and why you chose this moment.
  • Speak as if you were talking to one person, not reading a speech.
  • Find a quiet spot and keep the message focused on one idea.
  • Listen to the preview once to check the sound and make sure you are happy with it.
  • Set the unlock time carefully, especially if you are planning around an event in another time zone.
  • Keep the link private. For a more personal note, consider adding a password or requiring email verification.

If you are not sure what to say, try one of these openings:

“I wanted you to hear this from me when…”

“One thing I hope you remember today is…”

“Here’s the story behind why this moment matters to me…”

Send a Voice Note for the right moment

Whether it is a celebration, a little encouragement, or a story you want someone to hear later, a Voice Note lets you choose both the words and the timing.

Record a Voice Note and schedule it for the moment you want it to be heard.
